Projects at the airport
Upgrading the Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport
We’re making major improvements to the Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport to ensure it continues to meet the needs of Yukoners now and into the future.
These improvements include:
- reconstructing the main runway;
- upgrading taxiways; and
- improving the runway lighting.
Flights will continue to operate as normal throughout the runway reconstruction.
When flying out of Whitehorse, you’ll board as usual and be safely taxied to the parallel runway for take-off.
Sustainability and efficiency
As part of our commitment to sustainability:
- up to 500 new LED lights will be installed on the main runway to improve energy efficiency and reduce the airport’s carbon footprint.
- recycled and repurposed materials, including crushed concrete from the old runway, will be used in the new foundation.
Timeline and funding
- Construction is underway, with the new main runway expected to open in fall 2025.
- The Government of Canada has contributed more than $186 million to this project through the National Trade Corridors Fund.
